APEC investment experts stress importance of information exchange

Exchanging views and ideas within fellow members of the Investment Experts' Group (IEG) is the most important concept right now.

The conversations will eventually lead members to implement concepts in all domestic and international policies. That's according to Maxim Berdichevsky, IEG chair and Canada's Deputy Director of Investment Trade Policy Division at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD).

"We heard from some members and how they update their various Investment negotiations going on between each other. These are very useful insights into how some of the members are putting those concepts to practice in their ongoing negotiations."

"The main outcome of all these meetings is new ideas, how to implement these ideas," said Berdichevsky.

He also noted that the APEC forum opens the discussions to do things differently, foster new ideas, and generate new perspectives. It is now up to the IEG members how to implement them depending on their domestic and international priorities.

"The consistency that APEC injects into these thinking is what helps members, sort of bringing it all together and make it more coherent but the outcomes will be individual actions of the members going forward," said Berdichevsky.

The IEG is a sub-forum of the Committee on Trade and Investment working to enhance liberalization and facilitation of investment, as well as strengthen member economies' capacity building through economic and technical cooperation, under the authority of the CTI.
