APEC has given PNG Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) an opportunity for exposure to the world during this APEC Leaders Week.

SMEs aim to create employment and encourage sustainable trade to improve market access as it is crucial for economic growth.

There are 74 SME’s on showcase across four different locations which include the International Convention Centre (ICC), International Media Centre (IMC), Cargo Wharf and T-Wharf.

Each APEC meeting has showcased a variety of Papua New Guinean Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in which products from all 22 provinces have been represented.

Amongst the 74 SME, over 40 percent are owned by women with two based outside Port Moresby. All their products are locally made.

A criterion is followed to be registered by the IRC and IPA in order to differentiate from other informal business sectors.

The SMEs help support people in the informal sector by buying their products and showcasing them throughout the APEC Leader’s week as they do not have access to the market.

Items sold to delegates from all APEC economies include:

  • Bilums
  • Woven items (Bags, Mats, Wall hangers)
  • Baskets (Bougainville, Southern Highlands Province)
  • Artifacts (Stone Axes, Spears, Shields)
  • Wooden carvings (Masks, Figures, Utensils)
  • Jewelry (Made from seeds, shells and natural fibers)
  • Pottery
  • Paintings
  • Coconut-based products (creams, oils, lotion)

APEC has given the SMEs a chance to network and interact with the investors from around the world.

Meanwhile, the SMEs started showcasing their products on Monday leading up to the APEC Leader’s week and will end exhibition on the 18th of November.
