APEC Secretariat commends PNG in promoting Digital Economy

The Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat, Dr Alan Bollard commends Papua New Guinea for taking a unique approach as the host of APEC 2018 basing on internet and digital economy.

The Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat, Dr Alan Bollard commends Papua New Guinea for taking a unique approach as the host of APEC 2018 basing on internet and digital economy.

Dr Bollard made his remark at the closing of the CSOM saying that Papua New Guinea is putting a big focus on using the internet and digital technology.

“Papua New Guinea is working a particular approach for sustainable and inclusive growth by suggesting how we can be using digital technologies and the internet economy to work not just for big supply chains, not just for big multinational companies but for small medium enterprises and micro enterprises as well”, he said.

Furthermore, Dr Bollard stated that there are about a hundred million SMEs throughout the APEC region and if digital technologies were used that would be a whole new revolution.

Bollard added, “We’re also working on financial inclusion to help people set up bank accounts and get access to the internet and to help people in remote areas get access to it.”

In 2018, APEC has taken initiatives towards promoting the internet and digital technology through various programs such as the APEC 2018 App Challenge and the Blockchain Pasifik Junior Challenge. Applications such as bilumnious have also been created to help SME’s market bilums.

SOM Chair Ambassador Ivan Pomaleu, also gave an insight into what will be discussed in the Ministerial Meeting that will be held over the course of the next few days. They will focus on regional economic growth and issues relating to Bogor 2020 goals such as border barriers, regulations and also digital connectivity.
