The 52nd Tourism Working Group (TWG) began its meeting today in Port Moresby with discussions on endorsing several key tourism policy initiatives to promote best practice while promoting inclusive community based sustainable tourism initiatives.

The 52nd Tourism Working Group (TWG) began on Monday May 28, 2018, in Port Moresby with discussions on endorsing several key tourism policy initiatives to promote best practice while promoting inclusive community based sustainable tourism initiatives.

The CEO of the Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority, Mr Jerry Agus in his opening remarks for TWG said this is the opportunity to drive these policies forward for tourism growth and development.

Mr Agus said also on discussion for endorsement would be the APEC Economic Study on the Impact of Cruise tourism: Fostering MSMEs growth and creating sustainable communities and the recently concluded APEC Women in Tourism Dialogue.

He said the best practices would be driven under the area of volunteerism where volunteer services are delivered free of charge at the point of delivery at the destination.

“Volunteerism is one of the fastest growing tourism niche markets in the world and according to the APEC TWG Final Report February 2018, tourism makes up 8.5 percent of the Asia-Pacific Gross Domestic Product.

“I’m sure there would be cross collaboration and information sharing on the areas of tourism development affecting our Asia- Pacific region,” said Mr Agus.
