The host economy’s national policies and legal frameworks across APEC economies needs to be harmonized to enable cross border transactions and trade as well as collaboration.

The Papua New Guinea government recognises ICT has the potential to drive significant economic growth in PNG, deliver great benefits to citizens, transform the delivery of government services and include initiatives as:

  1. A new international submarine cable between Port Moresby and Sydney which is in its scoping stage;
  2. A domestic submarine cable linking Port Moresby to 11 PNG cities and an interconnection to Indonesia which is in its planning stage;
  3. A neutral internet exchange point (IXP) established in Port Moresby in 2017;
  4. A computer emergency response team (CERT) for PNG established in February 2018 to respond to cyber security incidents.

This was emphasized by the 2018 SOM Chair Ambassador Ivan Pomaleu during the opening of the 57th APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group meeting in Port Moresby today.

“Equally important delivering government services digitally can drive take-up and use of digital services both inside government and across the wider public.

The digitization of services can bring significant cost savings for governments and the infrastructure deployed to support e-government can promote wider access to digital services.

I’m sure during your deliberations over the next few days you will deliver better outcomes setting a pathway for facilitating greater regional integration for APEC members economies through ICT,” said Mr Pomaleu.

The 57th APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group meeting is a week long gathering and will end on May 8th in Port Moresby.
