The APEC 2018 PNG Coordination Authority held their first regional protocol training session in Kavieng, New Ireland province, to prepare young officers for the upcoming regional visit next month.

The protocol training was conducted upon the request of the New Ireland provincial government to the office of the Director General of APEC 2018 PNG Coordination Authority, Sir Charles Lepani, during his visit to Kavieng.

Over 30 individuals participated in the training session, including eight protocol officers, six VIP drivers, four high school students and four tour guides.

The protocol training was headed by APEC 2018 PNG Coordination Authority Protocol Manager Mr Richard Gogo with close assistance from protocol officer Nigel Onne Vagi.

Mr Gogo said that the training was an important initiative for young Papua New Guineans to prepare themselves as future protocol officers.

“It’s important for them to have an understanding of APEC, as each and every one of them have a very important role to play”

“We wanted to give the students an opportunity, as they will be used for the regional visits,” Mr Gogo said.

The key topics covered were:

  • APEC Protocols and Procedures
  • An Introduction to APEC
  • Cultures from each APEC Economy
  • Appropriate etiquette and attire

The upcoming regional trip to Kavieng will also provide an opportunity for regional-based micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to exhibit their local products to international delegates.

“We have asked them (MSMSEs) to display what New Ireland can offer, such as arts and crafts, demonstrations of wooden carvings, weaving, and fabric printing,” said Mr Gogo.

Regional visits for APEC delegates are an opportunity to showcase Papua New Guinea’s rich culture and bio-diversity to delegates from each member economy.

The regional visit to Kavieng will take place after the Tourism Week & Tourism Ministerial Meeting (TMM) on the 2nd June 2018.
