PNG to focus on renewable energy

Papua New Guinea will focus more on policies that promote renewable energy during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ summit.

Papua New Guinea will focus more on policies that promote renewable energy during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ summit.

Foreign Affairs Minister Rimbink Pato stated that renewable energy will be one of the hot topics to be discussed with foreign affairs and trade leaders of the APEC economies.

“Renewable energy is the way forward for PNG and the Pacific,” he said.

Mr Pato said the approach to use Renewable energy is simply to cut down on the harmful substances and chemicals that are released into the environment, which in the long run contributes to climate change and global warming.

“Climate change is an event that is affecting the whole world and PNG needs to be proactive in the fight against this issue,” he said.

He further stated that PNG needs to protect its environment during this time, as it is the most bio diverse nation in the world and in the pacific region.

“Papua New Guinea is a big brother nation in the Pacific and we have the responsibility to lead as role model in preserving and protecting our environment,” Mr Pato said.

The Minister added that he will be chairing the meeting for the foreign affairs ministers’ of APEC economies this week Thursday.

He added that one of the main agendas he will be discussing with his colleague ministers during this meeting will be entirely on policies that preserve the environment.

“We will pursue solutions and approaches that address the impacts of climate change in the pacific region “he said.
