The APEC Security and Prosperity Steering Group (SPSG) held the first workshop from its six-day program focusing on promoting security conscious internet usage in the APEC Region.

The APEC Security and Prosperity Steering Group (SPSG) held the first workshop from its six-day program focusing on promoting security conscious internet usage in the APEC Region.

According to Mr Henry Yu, Development Steering Group (DSG) Convener for the SPSG, a group of Experts from the APEC economies will be working towards providing experiences through discussions throughout their meeting as part of the cluster of meetings under the 57th APEC Telecommunications and Information Working Group (APECTEL 57’ 2018) Meeting.

The discussions during the SPSG meetings aimed at addressing challenges in internet infrastructure, a surfacing matter of interest when cybercrime is common in this day and age.

He added that the misuse of the internet has seen significant increase on the global scale.

“Today’s workshop is regarding the security of the internet infrastructure, as we all know the original goals of developing the internet is to easily communicate and link amongst all sources, but it is not built with security in mind,” Mr Yu said.

He added that the internet was created with a positive outlook to create global connectivity, as a very convenient way to reach all sources around the globe but creating an opportunity for threats.

“So, today’s workshop PNG has invited many experts from various economies and organizations including to share their valuable experiences.

“And we hope from today’s workshop, everyone can take something home on how to secure the internet infrastructure components such as BGP routing and DMS systems,” Mr Yu stressed.

He said the infrastructure components in ICT terms relate to having better access to secure and safe internet access.

“I am sure and I can tell that the 57 TEL will be one of the successful meetings”

The SPSG currently is working towards formalising the Cyber security Framework (Thailand) in promoting security and trust in e-commerce and networks and cybercrime prevention.

The project aims to help APEC economies to be aware of the progress of cyber security in the region and from relevant international bodies.

While this is happening, it aims to promote discussion on best practices and to find ways to move forward in safe internet usage.
