The participation of women in cocoa farming is increasing especially within the Central Bougainville area of the Autonomous Region.

Chair lady of Women in SME Delwin Ketsian, who is also from Central Bougainville, revealed that women in Bougainville are actively involved in cocoa farming with the hope to export their product overseas.

“A lot of us have small hectares of cocoa farms in our villages. I am seeing a lot of women with their families participate in farming and selling cocoa beans to local buyers in Bougainville,’’ said Mrs Ketsian.

Mrs Ketsian through her 25 hectare cocoa farm has developed different cocoa products, one of which is the Milkshake that has drawn attention of delegates currently attending the APEC Women Forum.

‘’Women are great innovators and for us in Bougainville, we try to make use of our cocoa beans.

“I make chocolate bars and cocoa powder for cooking and consumption and also the Milkshake which is all from my cocoa beans.

“These skills are shared among women in my area so they too must know the types of products their cocoa can be made out of instead of buying imported products,’’ she said.

While her participation in the forum was to display her products and learn from other women folk who were present, Mrs. Ketsian is also on a mission to identify any potential economy to partner with the local women in Central Bougainville to expand their vision of exporting quality premium cocoa beans.

"We have premium and quality cocoa beans from our area and we don’t want it go to waste by selling it at a lower price to our local exporters. “We want to sell directly to the exporter. “If there are any possibilities of establishing a chocolate factory here in the country, it would be a great opportunity for most us farmers who are into cocoa,’’ she said.

She added that women have always been great innovators in empowering their families through economic and social developments and this avenue has seen the resilience of women beating all odds to make a difference in their society.
